History of Puerto Galera

The fine beaches, beautiful coves and world-class dive sites of Puerto Galera have been attracting local and international tourists for many years. In fact the name “Puerto Galera” means “Port of Galleons” and was given by the Spanish during their colonial occupation of the Philippines. Due to Puerto Galera being one of the safest natural harbors in the world, Spanish vessels would seek out Puerto Galera during the months of the monsoon winds to take refuge from inclement weather whilst awaiting an onward passage or simply as a place to give the crews of the ocean-going vessels a recreational respite from the rigors of sailing. However, these historical leviathans did occasionally get caught out by foul weather as evidenced by the wreck of a Spanish Galleon which was discovered near the entrance of Puerto Galera harbor in the early 1980’s. The wreck was excavated in conjunction with the Philippine National Museum and several of the artifacts discovered are on display at the local Excavation Museum in Puerto Galera.

Puerto Galera is one of world’s most beautiful harbors and is part of a series of beaches, islets, bays and peninsulas that encompass the surrounding area. Puerto Galera is actually a recent addition to “The Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club”.

It is situated on the northern coast of Mindoro Island (the 5th largest island in the Philippine archipelago chain of 7,107 islands) which in turn is 12 nautical miles south of Batangas City, Luzon. Luzon is the largest island of the Philippines and the island upon which Manila is found.

Over the last 20 years as Philippine tourism has shifted from a backpacking crowd of slightly more adventurous travelers to a more up-market tourist who researches his vacation with the help of the internet and numerous guide books, so has the face of Puerto Galera. Accommodation standards now not only include local style “nipa” huts with basic amenities but range all the way up to 4-star resorts with swimming pools, air-conditioning, international restaurants, 24 hour bars, cable tv and hot water showers. A very high percentage of today’s travelers to the area are coming based on the reputation of the dive sites.
